Have An Urgent Question?

I get so much email with personal and specific requests for advice that I can't possibly answer them all. The Teen Advice site is set up to help you help yourself, with carefully chosen Subject Categories and Feature Articles dealing with the most common and controversial questions I get asked by teens. Before sending me an email make sure you have checked out the many resources available at the Teen Advice site.

Not sure where to start?
You can find answers to most of your questions here:

Please note that not all email questions can be answered personally. However, we do have an extensive and active community bulletin board where teens meet and discuss their problems and concerns. Your best bet for immediate advice is to post a message there. For security reasons, all first time users are subject to a 24 hour waiting period before being allowed to post, however, you can read the threads right away.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q. What kind of advice do you give?

A. Honest advice! I try to tell you what you need to know and what my own experiences have taught me. I NEVER judge you or condemn your questions. I have made my fair share of mistakes as a teen and I do draw on what I learned from those mistakes, but I try very hard not to preach. There are some things you have to learn for yourself. You can count on me to tell you the truth, even if it's ugly or unpopular, even if YOU won't like it. I don't hide behind what is PC and I never let my own beliefs stop me from giving you the whole picture. I will give you support when I can, show you how to get help when it seems necessary and share with you the wisdom of my own trek through "teen-dom" - and it won't cost you a penny!

Q. Why should I trust you?

A. I can't really give you an answer to that. I can tell you about myself and let you decide if I sound like someone you can trust. I have a learning disability that made school very hard for me. My father left my family when I was 8 and never looked back. I dropped out in grade 10 and started to hang around with a "rough" crowd. I did things I'm not proud of and hurt people who didn't deserve it (mainly my family). I got in some trouble with the law, did some really stupid things to my body and mind, and ended up a father at 18. When I was 21 I got full custody of my son and met the woman who is now my wife - 21 was a very good year for me. Over the next few years I pulled my life together, got an education, and started to work as a Special Needs foster parent. I work with kids who have had difficult or abusive families, kids who have problems with drugs and street life, kids who suffer from learning disabilities and mental disabilities like FAS and NAS. I try to act as a role model by letting them know that I hit rock bottom once too, but with love and confidence in myself made my life a good one.

Q. I'm a girl and you are a guy, how can you help me?

A. I don't need to be a girl to be able to help a girl. Lots of what troubles teens is the same for guys as it is for girls. But, where gender does play a role, I have a trustworthy advisor in my wife. When I don't know how to answer a question, be it from a girl or a boy, I know I can go to her for help. When my own experiences and knowledge are not enough and I need extra help with a question, I turn to the thousands of resources available on the web.
