In case of a burn:
If you still manage to get burned, here's the best way to deal with it:
Say "no" to tanning beds
If the real thing is bad for your skin, just imagine how dangerous fake sun is. Tanning beds' artificial radiation has all the risks of natural sunlight, without any of the benefits. Do yourself a favor and don't cook yourself in a tanning bed.
Say "yes" to self-tanners
Luckily, you can fake the real thing with a tube of self-tanner. You can find a variety of shades to match your natural skin color, and most of them are sophisticated enough to look authentic. So if you're dying for that tropical glow, head for the drugstore instead of the beach.
General sun tips
- Get in the habit of applying sunscreen every day before you leave home.
- Stay out of direct light during prime burning hours: 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
- Sit in the shade, and be careful around reflective surfaces, like water, sand, and snow.
- Don't tempt fate by using tanning beds.
- Get to know your body. Check your skin often, particularly moles, and pay attention to any changes. See a dermatologist if you think there may be a problem.
- Learn to like your looks, with or without a deep tan.
