If you help a friend commit suicide could you be charged with a crime?
Yes, in most Westernized nations assisting in a suicide is a crime. The only exception may be in cases of terminal illness,
and even this is still a highly contentious issue in most countries. For all practical purposes assisting in a suicide is
wrong and should you do it you will most likely face prosecution. Assisting in a suicide can range from giving somebody a
weapon or drugs, or playing look out while they take their own life. Helping somebody to die is not only criminal, it is
morally questionable and certain to leave you with some psychological issues of your own to work through.
What is "assisted suicide", and why do I hear in the news that some people think it should be legal?
Assisted suicide means that others help a person to take their own life. It is a very controversial issue and a hot bed of
moral debate. When we hear about assisted suicide in the news it is usually in reference to a medical professional helping a
terminally ill person die. The argument in favor of this type of suicide is that the individual in question is already going
to die and that suicide allows them control over how, how much pain they must live with first, and gives them a chance to say
goodbyes and set affairs in order before the illness overcomes them. Arguments in favor of assisted suicide never apply
to emotionally distraught individuals, mentally ill people, or clinically depressed people. With few exceptions, when we
talk about assisted suicide we are not thinking about teens. For the record, in North America and most other Western
jurisdictions assisted suicide is a crime.
What is meant by "suicide clusters"?
Suicide clusters are a relatively uncommon but very tragic phenomenon. When one teen commits suicide and then others in the
same peer group, school, or community follow in kind we call this a suicide cluster. This is different from group suicide or
suicide pacts where a group of teens agree to die together. Clusters are separate suicides or suicide attempts that occur
within a community of teens in a close span of time.
