Before you make your New Year's plans try to see the big picture. It may be tempting to get wasted on alcohol and drugs, but do you really think that this is the only way to have a good time? "Dry" parties have lots going for them. First, you are guaranteed to be in full control of what you do and say which translates in to no regrets the morning after. But more importantly, you are much more likely to have a good time and get home safely if you abstain from drugs and alcohol. Don't agree? The facts are against you. Teens who do drugs or alcohol at a party are more likely to have unplanned and/or unprotected sex, get in to verbal or physical fights, drive while intoxicated, get in to an accident, commit a crime, or be involved in a fatal incident. Hardly fun activities.

But there is some positive news to report. Statistics show that teens (16 - 21) are the most responsible age group when it comes to things like impaired driving or getting in the car with an impaired driver. You are more likely to call a friend on inappropriate drug or alcohol related behaviour or to put a stop to drinking or drug use when things start getting out of hand. You are more educated than past generations of teens and you are more realistic about the effects of drugs and alcohol on your life. And here's a big one (pat yourselves on the back) you are less likely than past generations of teens to pressure peers in to trying drugs or alcohol. You seem to accept "no" from others without letting it effect your opinion of them. In fact, many teens who admit to trying drugs and alcohol say that they admire people who have never indulged.

With all that in mind and in the interest of promoting informed choices and keeping you safe, Teen Advice has compiled some tips to help you keep unnecessary disasters at bay. Sobriety is best but if you feel you must indulge take steps to protect yourself. Remember, no matter what choice you make, responsibility is the key.

If you decide to stay sober...
If you decide to get drunk...
If you decide to try drugs...
