Q:

I need a part-time job. I asked my parents but they think that it will effect my education. Is this true? If it is I need advice, how can i prove to them that I can do it. Hopefully it will not effect my education.

A:

I am not able to determine what is best for you regarding your getting a job and how it will impact your education. Your parents are a much better judge of this than I could ever be. You must trust their guidance even if you don't like what they are saying.

It is definitely true that a job can have a negative impact on your grades, as time spent at work will be time you are not spending studying. If your grades are not as good as they could be, a job would definitely hurt. If you already have difficulties staying on task, getting your school work done properly, or balancing academic requirements with social necessities, a job is probably not something you should take on right now.

If you really need money, see if there is something your parents need done around the house that they would be willing to pay you to do. If there is nothing that fits the bill, try proposing a compromise. A good compromise to suggest -- you get your grades up to the level that your parents want, and then you get to have a job. As part of the deal you would agree that if your grades ever slipped, you would quit and put your attention back on your school work.

Good luck! I know it seems tough when you want a job but your parents say "no." It is best to do as they say even though it hurts your pocketbook. While you see only your immediate need for money, your parents see your future and the impact poor grades will have on it. Respect their opinion on this but still try to negotiate a compromise. If they are unwilling to bend, accept this and make getting better grades a full-time job. After you have pulled your grades up, then you can look at asking them to reconsider.
