Question: What Is the Age of Consent?

Answer: The age of consent is the age at which you are legally able to consent to having sex. You must be at the age of consent in order to have sex. The age of consent differs depending on where you live.

What If You’re Under the Age of Consent?

If you are below the age of consent you are not legally allowed to say yes to sex. No matter how in love you are, if you are not yet at the age of consent you can not legally agree to have sex. If you do have sex, the person you have sex with could be found guilty of statutory rape.

What Is Statutory Rape?

Statutory rape means that a person has committed rape by having sex with somebody who is under the age of consent law. Many jurisdictions treat people who are convicted of statutory rape just like other sex offenders. This is a very serious consequence.

Can You Have Sex Before You Reach the Age of Consent?

There is no way around it; you must have reached the age of consent before you can agree to have sex with another person. The person you have sex with must also have reached the age of consent in order to have sex with you. Some jurisdictions make exceptions if both people are under age but not all do. You have to know what the law is where you live to be sure.

Can Your Parents Over Ride the Age of Consent?

Your parents can not over ride the law and allow you to have sex before you reach the age of consent. If you are not old enough under the letter of the law you can not legally have sex even if your parents have no objections. Like the legal driving age or the legal drinking age the age of consent law has to be followed.
