Question: Why Are There Age of Consent Laws?

Answer: Age of consent laws exist to protect teens from adult exploitation. While some teens are definitely mature enough to handle themselves appropriately when an adult tries to get them to have sex, many teens are still developing their emotional boundaries and may confuse having sex for showing love.

Sex Is Not Love

Sex is only a part of love. Everyday people fall in love and stay in love without having sex. Having sex does not prove your love. Sometimes teens will encounter people who will try to play on the fact that they are still learning about love. The age of consent laws protect them from exploitation.

The Age of Consent Is Protection Not Punishment

To serve the greater good laws must be broad in their scope. Try to see the age of consent as protection rather than punishment. Like laws that outline the legal age for voting, drinking, smoking and driving, the age of consent is intended to ensure that individuals can understand the consequences of their actions. In this sense, the age of consent is no different than any other age limit that exists in the law.
